Act 1 scene 1

As the battle between King Duncan and rebel macdonald is being described by one of the Duncan’s soldiers.the battle is described “as two spent swimmers that do cling together and choke their art” a metaphor is being used to describe the battle and Shakespeare uses imagery of two swimmers. What this means is the two swimmers ( two armies) are “spent” (tired) and as a result they “choke their art” ( Lose the energy to swim) therefore they drown each other which means there is a stalemate in the battle as they are evenly matched

  1. You’ve got it. I’d stick the name of the act and scene in the title so this is easier to find in the future.
