English Essay

What is the relationship between spoken language and text?

The relationship between spoken language and text is very close.Due to the close relationship, they are also able to influence each other in many different ways. In this essay we will discuss the similarities, influences and the differences between text and speech.

The close relationship can affect the choices of words used. This can happen within language in text or when speaking. The type of words used are very important and it can affect what the meaning is. A example of this is Cat-woman and Cat-lady. If someone texted or said cat-woman , the person listening may think that the speaker is referring to the character in the fictional comic. This however could be understood as a woman with a cat or “Cat-Lady” if the relationship in the group is good, another factor whether the people in the group are able to understand is slang.

Slang are words and phrases that are regarded as very informal,They are typically used in text and speech by a particular group since they are able to understand. Accents are able to influence slang since it is a distinctive way of pronouncing language. This means that people with different accents will speak in a “distinctive way” so it might change the word choice. If slang is used in speech, then the user will use it in text, this is a influence since the way you speak has affected the way you text.As a result of the influence,it has made the text and speech have a very close relationship as a result.

An additional feature when texting is using emojis. Emojis are faces which are used to show emotion in your text.It is also used because saying a emotion such as”I am very happy” is less interesting than “☺️ ☺️ ☺️”. Another reason why emojis are used is because it replaces paralinguistic features, although you aren’t able to show your face or do hand gestures, emojis are a fun and smart way to show emotions. If emojis are used instead of paralinguistic features then features used in real life have influenced how you text.

If volume is raised when we are speaking, then it might suggest that we are angry since if we talk in a loud volume then it strikes fear into the person who is listening and it is also because it is how we let out our anger.Another reason why we raise the volume of how we speak is to raise the awareness of the hearer towards the person who is speaking,in other words it is to get the attention of the other person, anger can be involved with this in some circumstances since if you’re angry at someone then you want them to pay attention to you.In texting however you’re not able to see or hear the other person so volume is used in a different way.Capital letters are operated in texted to show volume,as a result of no human contact, the way it works is that if words have “CAPITAL LETTERS” then it makes the word bolder and bigger, filling in gaps which emphasises it making it “louder”.Using capitals to show the volume in text is now a netiquette(the acceptable way of using the internet) so almost everybody online will understand it.

With social media, it has increased the efficiency of how we talk since if you want to speak with another person who not beside you then you can using social media.Social media is all about efficiency an example is saying “GTG” instead if “got to go” people may suggest that the person is lazy but it saves time.Acronyms such a “GTG” or “LOL” are very normal nowadays on the internet. Many people don’t even use capitals to show that the word is shortened. The acronym lol is the most popular acronym on the internet and is now being used in speech.Lol mean “laugh out loud” which is to show laughter and many people who use the word in speech say lol instead of laughing, people listening may think that the person speaking is using verbal irony since saying lol instead of laughing may make then hearer suggest that he not interested or does not find it funny. Acronyms have made text and speech influence each other since text has made acronyms to be used in text, and speech has affected the efficiency of text producing acronyms such as lol.

Despite the fact that there are many similarities and influences, there are differences.Homophones.Homophones are words which sound the same but do no have the same meaning.”There” and “Their” is an example of a homophone,There is a word to show a place and their is to belongings. Both word sound the same but they have different meaning. When texting you are a able understand since the words and letters are visible. However in speech, hearers will have to understand which word the person speaking is using using the surrounding words. This is a major difference between texting and speaking.

There are many influence and similarities when texting and speaking which makes the relationship very strong although there are some differences there are more influences and similarities than differences.

Analysing text messages

“???”

Text messages are a form of electronic communication, therefor the are no human contact. This means there will be no paralinguistic features.Emoticons replace this since there is no words, just a symbol that us humans know.

Emoticons are also used to express the users feeling. You may be able to do this using word but emoticons are there to be more interesting
E.g:??? rather than “I love this”

“Wassssup”

This reason there are repeated letters in the the word is to add emphasis to the word this grabs the attention of the listener. Another reason why there is more emphasis is because the group have a good relationship, this means the writer feel comfortable to be informal

“With you bruv yeah”

There has been many changes to standard English and the word “bruv” is slang for the word brother or friend and despite the fact that it is lazy,it is mainly used by south Londoners because of its efficiently .The reason why the character in the transcript is using the word “Bruv” is because people in the group understand the word. This is known as an idiom. The group in the transcript know each other since they’re using idiomatic expressions. This may suggest their informality.

“Cuz of that”

The word cuz is a slang version of because. The reason why the speaker shortens the word is so it is efficient.”Cuz of that” is less polite than because of that, this indicates that the speaker may be angry or annoyed.
